Zambian ex-president’s family settle funeral row with government


After the day of insecurity and negotiations, the burial arrangements for Zambim’s former president were finalized.

Edgar Lung, who led Zambia since 2015. until 2021. He died 11 days in South Africa, where he received treatment due to undiscovered disease.

According to his family, he left instructions that his political rival and current president Hakainde Hakilem “should not come near his body.”

But the Lung family spokesman confirmed that the agreement has agreed with the Government that is allowed to cheer himself to chair the State Bury next week.

The order caused me among somebody in Zambia with people wondering how they should mourn their former leader.

After the day of the conversation, the Lung family and the Government agreed that:

  • The body of the former president will be flying to Zambian capital, Lusaka, on Wednesday on private payment plane
  • Upon arrival at the airport, the body will receive a family, and then it will be full of military honors
  • Then it will be translated to Lunguevo residence in Lusaka where to lie in the state
  • Three days, starting Thursday, will be taken to a conference center in the capital in which the public can pay his respect
  • State funeral will be held on Sunday 22. June with official sadness ending the next day
  • The former president will be intercepted in the Embassy Park on Monday, the official presidential cemetery.

At a joint press briefing in South Africa, Lunga Family Spokesperson Makebi Zulu, Sitting Alongside Secretary to Zambia’s Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, Said The Family Apologized “For The Inconvenience And Pain That The Protracted Negotiations May Have Caused But We Were Doing Our Best To Honour The Former President’s Personal Wishes. ”

Mr. Zulu also said that the family continued based on the fact that the government “does not deviate from our agreement”.

Speaking for the Government, Mr. Kangva filed a complaint of unity and thanked Zambians in patience “during this difficult time.”

After six years as the main state, Lungu lost elections from 2021. years in Hichilemi with a great margin.

After that defeat, he retired from politics, but later returned to break.

Again he had ambitions for the Presidency, but at the end of last year the Constitutional Court banned him to run, judging that he was already allowed to the maximum assigned by law.

Despite his disqualification from the presidential election, he remained extremely influential in Zambian politics and did not stay in his critique of his successor.

Long last year, Lung appealed police harassment and accused the authorities that they had been effectively placed under home detention. He also said he was prevented from leaving the country. The government denied both charges.
