The former faculty principle in the eastern Indian state of Odisha was sentenced to life in prison for sending a packet bomb that killed a newborn man and his great aunt in 2018. Years.
The Court found Punjilal Meher, 56, guilty of murder, attempted murder and use of explosives in what has become known as a “wedding bomb” that belittled India.
The bomb, disguised as a wedding gift, was delivered to the House of Soumia Sekhar Sahu, a 26-year-old software engineer, just a few days after the wedding.
When the couple opened the package, exploded – killing Sahu and his great aunt and leaving his wife, Reem, who opened the package, critically wounded.
As he admitted the Prosecution’s argument that it was a “terrible” crime, the court refused to classify him as a “rarest rare” case deserving the death penalty.

The victims were married for only five days and were preparing lunch when the package arrived at their home. Soumia was published and the wedding present seemed allegedly sent from Raipur in the State of Chattisgarh, more than 230 KM.

Investigators then told me that Mer handed the stern over professional rivalry and carefully planned the attack. He used a false name and address for sending a bomb from Raipur, choosing courier service without CCTV or package scanning.
The bomb was traveling over 650km (40 miles) by bus, passing through more hands before delivered. Investigators said it was raw, but a deadly device wrapped in the thread of Jute, set to be detonated to open.

Then, in April, an anonymous letter reached the Local Police Head.
He claimed that the bomb was sent under the name “S S Sinha”, not a sharm and cryptic mentioned motifs “betrayed” and money.
The letter claimed that three men “took the project” and were now “out of reach of the police”. He quoted the groom “betray” and money – hinting on a contemptible mistress or a dispute over the property – as motives. She also asked the police to stop disturbing innocent.
The letter has turned an investigation.
Arun Bughra, a police officer then sent to the Odisha’s criminal branch, noticed that the manuscript on the confirmation of the package misrepresented: it looks like “Sinha” more than “Sharma”.

The police now believed that the suspect sent the letter.
